World Environment Day, commemorated each year on 5th June, is one of the principal medium through which the United Nations stimulates worldwide awareness of the environment and enhances attention and action from last five decade. World Environment Day (WED) established by United Nations General Assembly in 1972, to mark the opening of the Stockhome Conference on the human environment. Another resolution, adopted by the General Assembly the same day, led to the creation of UNEP.

WED objective is to give a human face to environmental issues such as the depletion of the ozone layer, depletion of natural resources, desertification, global warming and empower people to become active agents of sustainable and equitable development; promote an understanding that communities are pivotal to changing attitudes towards environmental issues; and advocate partnership which will ensure all nations and peoples enjoy a safer and more prosperous future.

It’s time! Once again UNEP seeks to make the biggest global call and mobilization for action on 5th June, World Environment Day (WED) with the theme of “Only One Earth”.

“Only One Earth” was the slogan for the 1972 Stockholm Conference; 50 years on, this truth still holds - this planet is our only home.

The campaign invites everyone to celebrate our Earth through collective action to address one or more aspects of the triple planetary emergency: climate change, biodiversity and nature loss, pollution and waste.

Earth faces a triple planetary emergency: the climate is heating up too quickly for people and nature to adapt; habitat loss and other pressures mean an estimated 1 million species are threatened with extinction; and pollution continues to poison our air, land and water.

·         Earth’s climate has already warmed by about 1°C since pre-industrial times, with significantly larger increases over land. As a result, seasons are shifting and storms are intensifying; floods, droughts, heatwaves and wildfires are becoming more frequent and devastating.

·         The climate crisis is adding to the pressures on nature, as species and ecosystems struggle to adapt. Critical habitats from rainforests to wetlands continue to be lost to human expansion, including deforestation to make way for farming. Logging, overfishing and the illegal wildlife trade are hollowing out populations of rare plants and animals.

·         Air pollution, much of it from the burning of fossil fuels, causes around 7 million premature deaths a year. Nutrients from farming, sediment from soil erosion and discarded plastic waste are polluting both fresh and coastal waters

Youth and civil society play a key role in advocating for change to transform how we consume and manage the Earth and its resources. Everyone everywhere can help to create a more sustainable planet with following environmental conservation activities. It also includes examples of personal decisions to effect change and push for action.

The UN Decade runs from 2021 through 2030, which is also the deadline for the Sustainable Development Goals and the timeline scientists have identified as the last chance to prevent catastrophic climate change.

The 2021-2030 decade agenda for Sustainable Development seeks to end poverty, conserve biodiversity, combat climate change and improve livelihoods for everyone, everywhere. These objectives, encapsulated in 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) are unlikely to be met unless ecosystem degradation is stopped and ecosystem restoration is undertaken at the immense scale of hundreds of millions of hectares globally.
